Vaginal Sensitivity & Dryness

VAGINAL DRYNESS AND IRRITATION

Vaginal dryness or pain during sex is a common symptom due to reducing oestrogen levels and is a common menopausal symptom known as Vaginal atrophy

As a body transitions through the menopause, the lining of the vagina becomes thinner and is more sensitive and easily irritated.

I suggest that my clients can make a few lifestyle changes that could reduce their discomfort from vaginal atrophy, such as

  • Give up smoking as this decrease Oestrogen levels and increased the risk of developing or worsening the condition. Smoking also increases the risk of other serious health conditions

  • Stay sexually active, as when the vagina is stimulated, blood  flow increases to genitals, which helps keep the area healthy.

  • Avoid scented/ perfumed products, including powders, shower gels, soaps and deodorants. This includes scented or flavoured lubricants which can also irritate the vaginal area, so opt for plain and unscented, water based products. You can use Jojoba, Coconut oil and Aloe Vera as natural lubricants but avoid products such as Vaseline and petroleum based jellies and products

  • Regular exercise and physical activity aid hormone balance and also increases blood flow to the vaginal area

  • Stay well hydrated and drink around 2 to 3 litres of water a day. This ensures your body maintains moisture levels

  • Maintain a good pH balance by consuming a healthy, balanced diet and avoid alcohol, high fat/high sugar processed foods and take aways

  • Probiotics have been in tested in limited trials and have been found to alleviate vaginal atrophy but more research and findings are required

  • If your symptoms persist, visit your GP as you may require medical support in the form of Oestrogen topical gel or HRT
