🪷 MENOPAUSE IN THE WORKPLACE
Menopausal women are the fastest growing demographic in the work place and with 3 in 4 women experiencing symptoms associated with the menopause, the necessity to support them is becoming more and more important. A positive working environment not only provides an income, but in addition, it provides improved self esteem, a sense of worth and identity.
Recent studies show that 1 in 10 women will leave their jobs due to being affected by menopausal symptoms. A further study in the US showed that nearly 78% of women claimed menopausal symptoms had changed or affected their lives and 64% of them were totally unprepared for this phase.
There are a multitude of symptoms and these can affect your ability to perform your job in a range of ways. The most common to affect your work are hot flushes and night sweats which can lead to lack of sleep and fatigue. This and brain fog can also cause reduced concentration, affecting problem solving and decision making and generally your ability to cope with stressful situations. You may find that other symptoms also impact on your working day, such as increase toilet trips, headaches and migraines and joint/back pain.
Your employer should be proactively helping and support you through your menopause. Your workplace should have a menopause policy and strategy on place, but one size does not fit all, so be sure to speak to your superior or HR department for further advice and support to ensure your working environment is suitable for your needs and requirements.
Do not be afraid to speak up and seek support at work. It is their responsibility to ensure you are heard and supported. The more we speak up, the more we will be heard and the more your employer will be able to help you.
